Frequently Asked Questions

Like most Cub Scout packs, ours operates mainly during the school year, September to June, with some exceptions such as marching in the 4th of July parade for those who are in town.

A typical month includes one pack meeting on Monday nights, one den (grade level) meeting at a time determined by the den, and one pack event or service project probably on a weekend day. We also love it when families can plan or host one den meeting with their child's peers each year, though this is not required. meeting It is still possible to scouts to participate and advance in their rank even with time conflicts. Scouts will get the best experience by participating in as many pack and den events as possible. However, it is also possible for scouts to complete rank requirements on their own, reporting to den leaders as they progress.

A typical year is filled with all sorts of events for different interests and levels of engagement. We hike often, camp at least twice a year (including at least once at Nobscot, our scouting reservation in Sudbury's backyard), and go on additonal overnight outings such as Night Journeys at the Ecotarium in Worcester and Nautical Nights at Battleship Cove in Fall River. In recent years we've gone indoor rock climbing, rooler skating, and held gaming nights. Our pack also runs annual Pinewood Derby and rocket launch events where kids design and build their own cars and rockets.

The pack is all scouts grades K-5 together. A den is a group of scouts at the same grade level working together toward their rank by completing adventures catered to their age group. Pack meetings and events are typically led by the Cubmaster, Asstistant Cubmaster, and other adult leaders and are held about once a month at the church or at some large and/or outdoor venue. Den meetings are also about once a month, led by the den leader or a den parent, and held at the church, at someone's house, or at some other venue appropriate to the meeting's adventure or theme. 

Not at all! Your scout will participate in the den and rank with other scouts at their grade level. A scout joining in Kindergarten will be in the Lion den working on the Lion rank; a 1st grader will join other 1st graders in the Tiger den, and so on. However, it is not necessary to have completed prior ranks to participate in the rank for that grade level.

Cub scouting is a family affair. The parent and cub scout are like partners in their cub scouting journey.  It's a great opportunity for parent and child to share an experience, and it is also an expectation of the pack and of Scouting America. Parents are asked to be present with their scouts at events, and parents are required to be with their scout for overnight events.

Our pack cannot work without the efforts of many volunteers! Some feel comfortable exploring roles such as den leader, but many choose to "microvolunteer" for small jobs whenever they can. We encourage all families to volunteer as they are comfortable so our scouts' experiences can be extrordinary.

It is not necessary to have a uniform to come visit us! 

CLASS A SHIRT (required): After joining, we ask families to purchase a Class A shirt from the Scout Shop in Southborough. You can also purchase shirts online, but the scout shop shirts have the Mayflower Council patch and other patches pre-sown. You will also need to ask the Scout Shop to sew on the numbers "62" for our pack, or sew the "62" on yourself. Class A shirts are worn to pack meetings and some events.

NECKERCHIEF (required): As part of the Class A uniform, each cub scout rank has its own neckerchief, which our pack requires. Older scouts in our pack hand these down to younger scouts at the beginning of each year. You can also purchase one from the Scout Shop, and the pack will reimburse you. We don't reimburse for neckerchief slides. Some scouts buy them, and some make their own creative slides!

BELT: We do not require belts, but since earned adventures in younger ranks are belt loops made to fit the official scout belt, many scouts like them.

HATS: Not required, though many cubs like them.

PANTS: Not required for our pack.
